Palm House series, 2020–2025
Installation: printed ink on layered gampi and mulberry paper, Dimensions variable
Robinson’s Palm House series comprises five large-scale suspended installations that explore themes of protection, isolation, and fragility. Drawing on the architecture of historic glasshouses, each work reflects on the ways we preserve life in controlled environments — a concern shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic and the broader realities of climate change.
The works are constructed from layered sheets of translucent Japanese gampi and mulberry paper, materials chosen for their conceptual resonance. Gampi, in particular, is deceptively delicate in appearance yet remarkably strong, echoing the paradox of glasshouse architecture — seemingly robust structures that remain inherently fragile.
Printed with images of architectural frameworks and endangered plant forms, the layered surfaces evoke the experience of looking through a misted conservatory window. Palm House invites reflection on the boundaries between the natural and the built, and on the precarious systems we rely on to shelter what is most vulnerable.
